Mark Carlson spent eleven years as a police officer, detective, and sergeant in a Denver metro area police department.

As the sergeant in charge of the Investigations Unit, Mark trained newer detectives, provided oversight and direction on major cases and acted as a liaison with the local District Attorney’s Office and other law enforcement and government entities.  Mark developed a very good working relationship with these offices and still maintains those professional contacts.

Mark would personally investigate politically charged cases, cases receiving extensive media coverage and cases involving other sensitive issues.  Mark investigated cases involving employees at school districts and municipal government.  Mark received extensive training in the areas of workplace harassment, negligent retention, vicarious liability, and negligent supervision.

Mark trained other police officers in areas of search and seizure, crime scene documentation, and use of force.  Mark is a trained accident investigator and a certified computer voice stress analyst (CVSA).

During his eleven years in law enforcement Mark received many awards including:

  • The Medal of Honor in 2003 for heroism and exemplary performance above and beyond the call of duty involving extreme risk to his life
  • The Adams County Law Enforcement Officer of the Year for 2002 presented by the Adams County Bar Association
  • The Medal of Valor in 1997 for performance above and beyond the call of duty involving risk to his life
  • The Brighton City Manager's Community Service Award in 2002

Other awards included:  Brighton Police Department Commendable Service in 2005, City of Brighton Quality Service in 2002, and Brighton Police Department Community Service in 1998

For several years Mark volunteered his time teaching law related education classes at area high schools, churches, and civic groups.  He has conducted insurance claims and fraud investigations and he spent time as a Criminal Justice instructor at an area career college.
